Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. How does the Water Intake Calculator determine my hydration target?
The calculator uses a baseline fluid requirement calculated from your total body weight (~30–37 ml per kg of body weight), then factors in adjustments for age, biological sex, local climate conditions, daily exercise duration, and pregnancy or lactation status.
2. Does coffee, tea, or food count toward my daily water goal?
Yes. While pure water is the best source of hydration, moderate consumption of coffee, tea, milk, and water-rich foods (like fruits and vegetables) contributes toward your total daily fluid intake. However, it is best to aim for plain water for at least 70–80% of your total target.
3. Why does hot or humid weather increase my water target?
In hot or humid environments, your body sweats more to regulate its internal core temperature. The calculator adds an additional fluid allowance (up to 20%) to replenish water lost through increased perspiration.
4. How much extra water should I drink when exercising?
As a general baseline, you need approximately 350 ml (12 fl oz) of additional water for every 30 minutes of moderate-to-intense exercise. During intense workouts or extreme heat, you may also need to consume electrolytes along with extra fluid.
5. Is it possible to drink too much water?
Yes. Excess water intake over a short duration can dilute essential blood sodium levels, leading to a dangerous medical condition known as hyponatremia (water intoxication). Listen to your body’s natural thirst cues and pace your hydration evenly throughout waking hours.
6. What are early signs that I am under-hydrated?
Common early warning signs of mild dehydration include:
- Dark yellow or strong-smelling urine
- Dry mouth, lips, or throat
- Unexplained fatigue or mild headaches
- Decreased mental focus or dizziness
